I didn't realise that turning writing off using the inbuilt explorer "burn to CD" option didn't actually diable the Imapi service - it was apparently loaded when writing to a disc! Disable IMAPI Service (Work's in most cases): Launch Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services .
