Using Sony disks - sometimes work, sometimes don't - going to try another brand. When I looked at my services, I found that the IMAPI CD-Burning Com Service was already disabled. Speed 8x, time about 10 minutes. It has resolved my problem.

I didn't realise that turning writing off using the inbuilt explorer "burn to CD" option didn't actually diable the Imapi service - it was apparently loaded when writing to a disc!
