The first disk from the same package burned flawlessly at 16x so it may also have to do with the data stream (file) you're burning from. Thank you!!!

I have read on rpc1.org (firmware site) that they are notoriously fussy over media. Will tell how it went. I went through about 15 $1 disks before I found this. Bye.
Wonderful that hardwares are still like that ! So I replaced the IDE 80pin ribbon and that did it.
